Fourvière Hill

The Esplanade de Fourvière was a strategic location for the Romans who settled on the hill in the 1st century BC. The name Fourvière comes from the Latin forum vetus in reference to the forum, a large public square in the ancient city, which was situated not far from here. The current imposing Basilica was only constructed in the 19th century.
