A Benedictine abbey founded in 859, the church was built between the ninth and twelfth centuries, and by the thirteenth century it was one of the most powerful abbeys in France. It was devastated by religious wars in 1562. Listed as a historical monument in 1840, it was restored in the nineteenth century and decorated by Hyppolyte Flandrin.
